An Introduction to Butoh: Traditional Japanese Dance
N.B. You do not need to have any dance experience to enjoy this dance form!
Butoh is an expressive Dance form founded in the 1960s by Kazuo Ohno and Hijikata Tatsumi. This workshop introduces participants to the history and ethos of the dance form, basic movement techniques and image-based improvisations to allow participants to engage with the form on a personal level. Butoh also helps to improve embodiment and performance presence, and is a great accompaniment to Dance and Performing Arts courses.
For younger participants workshops will include a fusion of Butoh with Body Popping and Hip Hop, as well as referencing the movements of Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake.
For more advanced movers (e.g. adults and university students) Silversmith will include the exploration of the physicality and embodiment of character presented in Silversmith's piece Six O'clock Swill. The workshop will draw on Butoh techniques to help participants master body control to create physical expression to form characters and begin to build narratives.
