Silversmith Dance Theatre is dedicated to exploring personal and fictional narratives that relate to social and current issues. Silversmith create accessible contemporary work that presents the audience with intriguing characters, stories and environments. Our work aims to asks provocative questions that will engage the audience, and those involved in our projects, in reflection upon their lives and the World around them.
Artistic Director, Lorraine Smith explains:
'I am drawn to the lives and stories of people. I use my imagination and creativity to structure my thoughts, questions, ideas and emotional responses to what I perceive into a tangible form that an audience can experience and question with me. This process helps me to understand myself and how I relate to Life, and all the strange and wonderful things it entails!'
Our work is live, experimental and collaborative in nature. Silversmith is passionate about the importance of sound, light, use of text and costume to be as integral to the work created as the live performance to give audiences a 'Total Theatre' experience. Work has been shown in a variety of settings including traditional theatres and public spaces, and Silversmith is always open to performing within different contexts to keep the work fresh and continually developing and evolving.
We also enjoy an interactive element to our work, when appropriate to the project, to explore audience-performer boundaries to give a more tangible and personal experience to the audience members.
Lorraine Smith collaborates with artists from diverse backgrounds to add to the artistic boundaries and vision of the company;
'Working with new and diverse artists allows me to maintain a fresh approach to my creative process; where new ideas and skills can be shared and built upon, and the company can continue to evolve its practice.'
